Ashes to Ashes by kagaminoir Ashes to Ashes by kagaminoir
"Of all of My creations, I made only you in My image, that you might create as I have. Instead you have wrought destruction upon My garden and then come begging Me for salvation. You were once My greatest creation, but now you have become My greatest disaster. So with a heavy heart, I must return you to the dust from whence you came."

My entry for the Darksiders: Your Last Days Contest. Closeups to come soon.

Hah, well, that sounds like an interesting story then. ^^ Sure, feel free to use the quote. If you can, it'd be nice if you could credit me somewhere. ^^

Whoa! This should have been one of the finalists. This is SO cool! The horsemen are great. I like the dying vines, too. Great skill and great idea. Did you come up with that quote yourself? It's really good! I haven't read the bible (tried, and couldn't get myself past the beginning. UGH!), so forgive me if it's a direct quote. I love this picture, though. I wish you had gotten better results from the contest. This is better than their 1st place choice.

Aw, thank you! Hah, it's still not done. >_< It's so hard to make myself go back to older paintings when I have so much new stuff I want to do!

Don't worry, I haven't read the Bible either. ^^ Yeah, I came up with the quote myself to make it fit the image. ^^

And I've learned to take these dA contests with a very large grain of salt. I mean, I totally understand that there's a matter of taste, but some of entries that get picked...well, it discourages me from entering the contests. Especially for this particular one. When I saw what won, I realized that I would've had a better chance had I just taken some of the stock images they provided and slapped them together in a couple hours. They were never interested in fresh ideas; they wanted to promote the game, period.

I think you're right. I haven't entered any contests yet, but I want to and I've been doing research on the kinds of artwork that wins. I have often been disappointed int heir choices as well.

Aah, I just checked the list of semi-finalists for the contest in the news yesterday.

I'm really sorry to not have seen your wonderful painting there. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I still think the judges made a mistake here.

... I guess I just want to drop by to say I'm sorry to see this turn of events and that this is still a wonderful, wonderful painting.

dA continues to totally baffle me with their contest choices. I never saw the semifinalists for the Dreams contest and I can't seem to find the list anywhere at all, but I saw the winners (which I found by chance) and I have to disagree with their picks. And these 25? There are a token few that I agree with, but the rest? Now, I'm not saying that mine should've been in the top 25, but I know that there were better pieces than some of those 25 (now 24). I'm sorry, but if this is billed as an art contest, one would think that the execution of said art would carry some kind of importance.

If I were Joe Madureira and I saw these pieces, I would think, "Man, dA artists must really suck if these are the best of the entries."

Anyway, I still need to finish this piece soon. ^^ Didn't want to say it openly before, but it's not quite done...

Art is entirely subjective, but DA continues to show how subjective could the judging of art be.

I saw the list of semi-finalists linked in the "news" section a few days ago. Thinking fully that I'd find your piece there, I clicked in to see what sort of competition you're up against. You can imagine my dismay when I saw that you're not among one of the chosen. While one pieces show technical merit and others show somewhat interesting themes, the collection as a whole is rather disappointing. Some of the pieces are blatantly plagiarised thematically from disaster movies that we see littering the Hollywood market. Others show images that cannot be easily linked (or interpreted) to have any correlation to "end days". I am not sorry to say that I am disappointed by this list of semi-finalist as well. And to think - to choose a winner from chafes and husks is a thankless task... one that could've been easily avoided in the beginning.

I shouldn't speak, really, but I've grown very disillusioned by the contests that are hosted on DA in general. I know I'm not much good to start with, but some of the winners aren't that much better, either.

That's all right, I am still fully, 100% behind this piece. I'll be waiting for the final completed piece!

I think that first off, fanart should not have been allowed in this contest. I know it was allowed by the rules and they even provided stock from the game for people to use, but the topic was our personal vision of the apocalypse. Using art from the game makes it the studio's vision, not ours.

Secondly, IMO, there is taste and there is skill. IMO, parts of art are subjective, yes, but parts of art are factual regarding ability to execute the art. There is no way you would look at my first grade art and say I was a master artist, regardless of "taste". Of course, you wouldn't say that to the first grade me because you don't want to hurt a little kid's feelings. However, this was not a grade school contest and we don't need to be recognized for mere "effort" or "feeling". I believe there were plenty of pieces that combined both good ideas/emotion and good art. I am curious to see what Joe Madureira makes of the art.

Anyway, onwards to bigger and better things. ^^

I agree with you.
Even if I am guilty of drawing fanart from time to time, I don't like the idea of taking fanart seiously. And in a field of comepetition, fanarts shouldn't be allowed at all. I know that in this instance they were allowed, but, just like you, I think it's a bad decision. I see things from a slightly different way, however. Instead of personal and others' visions, I see it as a form of hypocrisy. Any piece of fan-work is technically plagiarism. Even when they are allowed, people should be given the right idea that what they are doing is taking what others have done before them and using it for themselves. While we scream and clamour about plagiarism and pirating in the money-making industry, we allow the existence of fanart in pieces that may eventually be used for commercial purposes. What sort of strange double-standard is this?

I also have to agree with you here. There is a difference between skill and taste.
Unfortunately, when it comes to skill, I am been brought to the conclusion that it can also be judged rather arbitrarily. And since the North American culture is filled with "aww... nice try! Here's something for your effort!" idea, skill becomes pushed back further into the judges' heads in a competition. I realise that this is no longer a little kids' game here. Unfortuantely, we are dealing with a bunch of grown-ups who grew up with the same little kids' mentality intact. The winners are not supposed to be happy that he won, and the losers are awarded for their efforts. Everyone's work is "tremendous" no matter what. We are not dealing with an isolated incidence here... we are simply looking at the tip of the iceberg.

Aah, but that is exactly why I wrote back to you, right? I don't want you to become disheartened by what had happened here.
This world is not fair, but please don't let that get to you. It -is- time to move onwards to bigger and better things.

Hm, actually I was just now looking at the winners (what a surprise; an artist judge picked good art) and I came upon this comment. Wait, so it was basically a fanart contest?? I'm confused now. Whatever. As I said, moving on from this contest. ^^ At least the winners are fairly satisfactory and not overly surprising. (There was quite a number of semifinalists that I was absolutely certain a professional artist would not pick.)

Anyway, thanks for your constant support! ^^ It's always nice to know that there are people who appreciate my art out there! (Even when I myself am not totally satisfied with it, LOL!)

Well...
I read the comment and I don't think too much of it. More of an excuse more than anything else, really. "Inspired by graphic elements" from the game does not mean "fan art" in the sense that there is no limit to the human imagination. A true fanart contest would say "created from/incorporates graphic elements from the game". I can see why they would make this a "fanart contest", however - if the publishing company wants to do something with the winners' works... they can just take it and go. Basically, they are doling out some candies so they can later legitimately take away the artwork to use for their own purposes.

... as Dan Brown said in the DaVinci Code, "So dark, the con of man".
(DaVinci, in honour of where you've drawn your inspirations from. Of course.)

I agree. The winners themselves are quite satisfactory. These are works that I wouldn't dream of creating in this life time. I guess they did pick up the pearls from the chafe.

And... can't agree with you more - it's time to move on to bigger and better things.
Hope this one didn't drag you down!

Yeah, I think that if what they're looking for is fanart to promote the game or whatever, they need to just say it straight up. Oh well, no worries. I just made a note to myself that the next time dA holds a contest in conjunction with something commercial that they're not really looking for originality, regardless of what the contest brief says. And I'll be looking at dA contests very skeptically from now on anyway. No big deal. ^^
